Best Things to Do in Big Boulder

1. Ski the Slopes

As the snow falls on Big Boulder, whispers of the impending ski season float along the eastern coast. The Poconos may not have the peaks seen along the Rockies, but the region has a reverent charm that has made it beloved among couples and families.

Big Boulder Ski Area and Jack Frost Ski Resort are two of the best peaks in the Pocono Mountains. Owned by Vail Resorts, they’re available on the Epic Pass. You can also purchase daily lift tickets.

They combine to create Jack Frost Big Boulder (JFBB), which offers night skiing, snow tubing, and terrain parks. Ski School can help get newbie skiers and snowboarders up to speed, and each peak offers ideal conditions for beginners.

Although the snow report may not always look ideal, Jack Frost Resort has perfected the art of snowmaking since the 1950s.

2. Take a Hike

Life here in Big Boulder isn’t all about the snowfall and the vertical drop. Exploring the area in the warmer months is great for first-time visitors.

Wander beyond the mountain resort to uncover a world of natural beauty and wilderness at your doorstep. State parks like Hickory Run provide miles of fantastic hiking trails, gorgeous landscapes, and plenty of memorable views.

3. Explore Lake Harmony

Just around the corner from Big Boulder lies Lake Harmony. Both a town and a gorgeous body of water, you can dance between the lakeside trails and explore the downtown shops, bars, and restaurants, including Nick’s Lake House Restaurant.

During the spring, summer, and fall you can get out on the water, go kayaking, fishing, or even zip around on a jet ski. In the evenings, take a stroll into Shenanigans and break out your best dance moves.

4. Book a Tee Time

If you like to pair your vacation with a golf day, then Big Boulder delivers. As you plan your trip, be sure to book a round at Jack Frost National Golf Club.

The beauty of the Poconos and the mountain landscapes make for a fun day on the fairways (or in the roughs). Thanks to its wider fairways, the course is challenging but forgiving.

However your day on the greens goes, the outdoor bar and pavilion delivers the post-round vibes with cold beverages and gorgeous vistas.

5. Experience the Daisy Field Farm

Whether you’re traveling to Big Boulder as a couple or a family, Daisy Field Farm works great for a leisurely date or family fun time. The family-owned horse farm is close to town and a place where you’ll find stables of horses, farm animals, and even wildlife.

Embark on trail rides to find deer, turkeys, and other animals. Kids under ten can enjoy a pony trail ride, or you can all enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride. To top it off, load up the picnic baskets and enjoy their beautiful fields.

As the snow melts, the Poconos enters a slightly awkward shoulder season. The temperatures slowly creep up, rising from 42 in March to 66 in May.

It’s not until late April that the hiking and horseback riding trails are great for adventure. The good news, however, is the last half of Spring is ideal for strenuous outdoor activity, while local adventure courses and indoor water parks are perfect for kids. All with discount shoulder season prices.

Travel Tips for Big Boulder

1. Rent a Vehicle

Unless you plan on staying close to Big Boulder, then it pays dividends to have access to a car. Many visitors drive down from nearby cities such as Philadelphia and New York. However, if you’re flying in we recommend a rental vehicle.

You can take a stroll down to Lake Harmony and its vibrant downtown. But to see the best of the local state parks, public lands, and major events around the Poconos, a car is your best option.

2. Pack for the Season

Cold temperatures in Big Boulder hit differently than in the Rockies or California. It’s a damp cold, the type that can seep through your clothing and into your bones. So, while the forecast may look the same, you’ll be glad to put on a few extra layers as you enjoy your winter sports.

We recommend warm base layers, such as Merino wool. Add on a wind and waterproof jacket, plus insulated snow pants.

3. Families Love the Shoulder Season

Whether it is late spring or late fall, families benefit the most here in Big Boulder. While not peak summer or the heart of ski season, hiking and horseback riding trails remain open, with the latter often at a discount. Savings continue at outdoor adventure courses and indoor water parks.
